Background Information

Through community consultation in developing the Port MacDonnell Urban Design Framework 2014, improvement of town signage was a key part of the community’s vision for the town. The community saw this as a key opportunity to achieve a consistent brand for the township, to enhance legibility and to reduce clutter.

Original concepts of the signage plan were articulated in the Masterplan, and Council has developed these concepts into a signage plan that is intended to facilitate the development of well-designed and positioned signage.

As well as the District Council of Grant logo, The Port MacDonnell Signage Plan incorporates the use of a specially designed logo, a deliberate step towards further developing Port MacDonnell as a coastal tourism destination. Residents can already see the logo in use on other Council assets such as the marine facilities and the Port MacDonnell Community Complex.

What will the project deliver?

The Port MacDonnell Signage Strategy 2017 will ensure a consistent approach to the implementation of new signage or the upgrade of existing signage in the Port MacDonnell Township.

Each sign has been designed at an appropriate scale and application and/or installation of these signs will be based in the guidelines from the Australian Standards Code of Practice for adoption in South Australia.

All signs are accompanied by engineering specifications for installation.

What are the benefits of this project going ahead?

Signage is a powerful tool for communities to develop an identity for the region, create a positive first impression for visitors and aid navigation and wayfinding.

New signage in Port MacDonnell has been identified as a catalyst project, a smaller scale project that will continue the translation of the Masterplan.

The Port MacDonnell Signage Strategy 2017 compliments The Waterfront Masterplan project. More details on this project are available here.
