Australia Day 2018

Members of the District Council of Grant community have been recognised in the 2018 Australia Day Citizenship Awards, which were announced at Council’s Australia Day breakfast celebration at the Tarpeena Football Oval on Friday 26 January 2018.  Australia Day Ambassador, former CEO of Operation Flinders, John Shepherd, assisted the Mayor to present this year’s District Council of Grant Australia Day Awards.

The Community Event of the Year was awarded to the Port MacDonnell Community Emergency Response Team.  The Team was the first of its type in SA, and shortly after they commenced were responding to over 100 emergencies and events per year. The success of this model has now been replicated at 5 other locations across the state.  Since January 2006 the volunteers at Port MacDonnell have given over 71,000 hours of service being ‘on call’, plus further times when they have responded to call outs when not rostered on.

Other groups nominated in this category were the Kongorong Rodeo and the Yahl Primary School Spring Fair.

Jason Watts from Kongorong was awarded the Young Citizen of the Year.  Jason was involved in extracurricular activities when he attended Allendale East Area School, and has been a very active volunteer with the CFS since he was 15.  Now at the age of 20 he is the Brigade Lieutenant and Training Coordinator of the Port MacDonnell CFS, and volunteers much of his time at training and at many community events in the district.

Yahl’s Kylie Boston was named the Citizen of the Year, with Peter Balnaves from Tarpeena and Port MacDonnell’s Jennie Tilley also being worthy nominees for the Award.

Kylie has been heavily involved as a volunteer in a number of community organisations including Yahl Progress Association, Hall Committee, Playgroup, and Primary School, South Gambier Netball and Football Club, Mount Schank Tennis Club, Lakes Junior Tennis Association and Tonique Dance Studio. Thanks to Kylie’s nomination to Dairy SA, Mount Schank was named 2017 Legendairy Capital of South Australia. The playground at the Mount Schank Tennis Club was updated with funds received from the award.
