The $9.2M Mount Gambier Regional Airport project will now proceed after a $3.5M funding announcement from the Building Better Regions Fund Round 2. Minister for Regional Development, Territories and Local Government, the Hon Dr John McVeigh, MP, travelled to Mount Gambier to make the announcement with District Council of Grant Mayor Richard Sage, City of Mount Gambier Mayor Andrew Lee and Member for Barker, Mr Tony Pasin, MP. 

15 November 2018

Council has awarded a $239,500 contract to Ashley Halliday Architects for the design of the airport terminal. Four consultants were invited to submit tenders, and Ashley Halliday represented the best option for Council. They have experience in the Kangaroo Island Terminal, which was one of 12 finalists in the World Architecture Festival transport Award. 

09 May 2019

Construction has commenced on the $9.2M Mount Gambier Regional Airport Upgrade project with Heenan Earthworks, the lead contractor for the runway and heavy apron beginning on site. 

Heenan Earthworks were successful in their tender for the civil works which includes a 120 metre asphalt extension to runway 18/36 and construction of a heavy aircraft apron; with both projects scheduled for completion October 2019.

Planning and development for this project has been undertaken in collaboration with various government agencies and in consultation with business and industry over many years. A redeveloped airport for the Limestone Coast Region is therefore well recognised and supported.  Planning, concept design, civil works and building activities for both airside and landside projects are planned to be completed by December 2020.

What will the project deliver?

The scope of work for the Mount Gambier Regional Airport Redevelopment will be delivered over one continuous stage between 2018-2020 with outputs for both airside and landside activities.

Airside Outputs:

  • Lengthened main runway by 120 meters to 1644 metres
  • Grooving of runway
  • Heavy Aircraft Apron
  • New lighting to include three new floodlight towers, seven new floodlights and fifteen taxiway centre lights
  • New edging and turning node at runway extension
  • Recalibrated GPS approach

Landside Outputs

  • Extended and upgraded terminal building
  • 20kwh solar system
  • Covered passenger drop off zone
  • New road pavement
  • New paving
  • Modified signage
  • Landscaping
  • Security Fencing
  • External Lighting

Timeline

A timeline for this project is yet to be announced, however the project is due to be completed by December 2020.

A wide range of public and stakeholder engagement process will be undertaken throughout the course of this project which will include government agencies, local residents, community groups and peak industry bodies.
