Increase in Passenger Numbers at Mount Gambier Regional Airport

Published 22nd October 2019
Demand for the services of Regional Express (Rex) Airline service rose during the first quarter of 2019-20 with a marked increase in passenger numbers travelling through the Mount Gambier Regional Airport.

The first quarter report for 2019 charts that 22,388 people flew with Rex, in and out of Mount Gambier, between July and September 2019 – up by 11.4% from the previous year.

Acting CEO Jane Fetherstonhaugh is pleased by the numbers.

“In particular Council are impressed by the number of people taking up the Community Fare option which was introduced in October 2018. Just over 5,000 people between July and September this year travelled on the Community Fare. That represents 23% of travellers and indicates that the Community Fare scheme is making a difference and supporting air travel to be more affordable and accessible for our region. ”

In 2018 a five year partnership was forged between Council and Rex, which resulted in Council reducing the head tax by $2 per person. This move was matched by Rex resulting in an overall $4 reduction off all existing fares, paving the way for the Community Fare scheme to be introduced.

The Community Fare is available on 25% of total seats for sales outside 30 days prior to departure and for all unsold seats 24 hours prior to departure.

Flight schedules and fares are available at www.rex.com.au and for more information visit Mount Gambier Regional Airport.
