Ingenuity and Mateship at the Port MacDonnell Mens Shed

Published 10th December 2019
The Port MacDonnell Mens Shed continues to provide a place for local men to participate in woodwork projects, play a hand of cards or billiards and catch up for a coffee in an atmosphere of mateship.

Always looking for new ideas and experimenting with various local and interstate timbers, the Port MacDonnell Mens Shed are working on a new initiative, making toggles for craypots that recreational and professional fisherman can purchase. Available to purchase at $1, each one is made by hand on site and the toggles enable to fisherman to secure the bait basket inside the pot.

They also sell bags of kindling, a popular enterprise that nets the group approximately $3000 per year and at $9 a bag, it’s a bargain and the best timber around for lighting a fire.

Items made by the Mens Shed are sold at the Port MacDonnell Community Complex, the Port MacDonnell General Store and the Mens Shed directly on Elizabeth Street. All funds raised go back into community projects as well as providing upgrades to tools and facilities for the members.

The group have also completed the restoration of a derelict billiard table which they will use for social activities. Over the course of many months each member of the group has had some involvement in the restoration, producing a beautiful and high quality result.

Mens Sheds are amazing places for mateship, socialisation and creativity. In 2013 Beyond Blue release a report into the positive and powerful effect Mens Sheds have on the physical and mental wellbeing of members. It is clear to see that the Port MacDonnell Men’s Shed is a place of learning and passing on of skills amongst friends, generating a sense of purpose and community spirit.

The Port MacDonnell Mens Shed is open Tuesday’s and Thursday’s and is located at Elizabeth Street, Port MacDonnell. New members are always welcome and more information can be found by emailing the club at ms13pmd@hotmail.com.
