The District Council of Grant are very pleased with the announcement yesterday (24 November 2019) by the Minister for Agriculture, Food & Fisheries and Regional Development, the Hon Tim Whetstone, MP, of funding of $385,000 from the State Government’s Regional Growth Fund towards a co-funded $770,000 project for the Mount Gambier and District Saleyards.

The Mount Gambier and District Saleyards are the largest cattle exchange facility in the Limestone Coast region and are an integral part of the regional community. $108M worth of stock were sold in the Saleyards during the 2018-2019 financial year.  Indirectly the Saleyards assists six agents, many local livestock transporters and many local producers.  The Mount Gambier and District Saleyards are wholly owned and managed by the District Council of Grant and have been in operation since 1977.

Councillor Barry Kuhl, Presiding Member of the Mount Gambier and District Saleyards Strategy Committee, said, “The project will see the installation of two new state of the art adjustable cattle ramps with both rear and side loading options that will cater for both B Doubles and A Doubles which will greatly assist stock transportation. The new ramps will provide increased efficiencies and productivity when loading and unloading cattle, meaning less downtime reduced waiting periods and quicker turnaround.”

Councillor Kuhl went on to say that safety will be an important part of the new infrastructure with safety fence panels and access loading platforms to be incorporated.

The project will also include reconfiguration of cattle holding pens, civil works to upgrade the access to the new ramps and associated building works.

In addition to the jobs created during the construction phase the project will help secure ongoing jobs in this important industry which contributes significantly to the State’s economy.

The project is expected to commence in the first half of next year and be completed by the end of 2021.
