In September the Ombudsman SA released a report into SafeWork SA and unsafe practices at the Mount Gambier and District Saleyards. Following consultation with representatives from the Livestock and Rural Transporters Association of Victoria (LRTAV), the District Council of Grant responded quickly to rectify these safety concerns with the improvements completed on Friday 25 October 2019.
Acting Chief Executive Officer, Mrs Jane Fetherstonhaugh, said; “the modifications to Ramp C along with other suggested improvements to improve operation flow as well as the experience for both livestock and handlers have been completed this week These changes included the installation of slam shut gates, additional access gates and sheeting on the sides of pens to improve animal movement.”
Effective relationships have been developed between the Council, LRTAV and the stock agents; a reflection of each party’s commitment to maintain strong and clear communication in all matters relating to the Saleyards, Mrs Fetherstonhaugh said.
Mr Chris Manser, Chairman of the Mount Gambier Combined Agents Group welcomed the upgrades saying, “the upgrade on the B-double loading ramps have helped the loading and unloading of cattle with greater safety and even flow of cattle. The Agents are pleased with the speed in which Council addressed this safety issue and worked to create a safer environment for workers and the movement of cattle”.
Mr Mick Debenham, LRTAV, was equally impressed stating, “the LRTAV are extremely grateful that the District Council of Grant have not only listened to our concerns and advice to improve the welfare of both livestock and handlers, but acted upon them in a timely manner. This demonstrates the Council’s recognition of the important role that transporters play in their saleyard business.”
The Mount Gambier and District Saleyards are the largest livestock exchange facility in the Limestone Coast region and are an integral part of the regional community. $108M worth of stock were sold in the Saleyards during the 2018-2019 financial year. Indirectly the Saleyards assists six agents, many local livestock transporters and many local producers.
