Voting

All voting in council elections is done by post. Enrolled voters receive a voting package through the mail and return their completed ballot paper in the reply paid envelope provided. See the LGA website in sources below to find out more about enrolling to vote or check your enrolment details.

Voting packs are distributed in the mail at least 2 weeks prior to the close of voting, 5pm on Friday 10 November. For the 2022 periodic election ballots will be mailed out between Friday 14 October and Thursday 20 October.

In addition to ballot papers, each pack includes information about the candidates standing for election. Votes must be received by the Returning Officer no later than the day and time noted on the ballot materials.

A postal voting guide included in the package explains how to complete and return the ballot papers. Information is also available on the Electoral Commission of South Australia website.

Unlike State and Federal elections, it is not compulsory to vote in South Australian council elections. However, council elections are the biggest single voluntary civic participation activity in the state with nearly 400,000 people voting in the 2018 periodic council elections.

Your council candidates

Your ballot pack will contain information on the candidates running for council in your area. You can learn more about them with the information provided in their profiles, or arrange to meet them face to face to understand why they are running for council.
